  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Henry J -- Essential reading for revolutionaries - a masterpiece. : Revolutions and other mass movements all have commonalities, chief among them are the people who start and promulgate them. This short, concise book breaks down and organizes the characteristics of these people: The True Believers - and the movements they promote. This is a book of genius, comparable to ‘The Prince’ or ‘Rules for Radicals,’ in its simplicity and insights into human nature and organized political action. Hoffer wrote this book after the Second World War while the memories and realities of Fascism and Communism were very present. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eclectic Teacher -- Explains much of the insanity that is today : I think I first heard of Eric Hoffer decades ago, but I never got around to reading anything by him. I really wish I had read this book at least 20 years ago. His insights into much of what appears totally insane and contradictory and paradoxical in the world today, from the media, to education, to politics, can be explained in part by this book. I look at the bizarre fanaticism of the protesters tearing down their own history (statues) and wonder what drugs they must be on, or how stupid they must be, to think that it's a good idea. And yet, here within 168 pages of easy-to-read text is an explanation to why people are responding to the gaslighting as they are. It dovetails will with some other books, such as "The Evolutionary Psychology Behind Politics..." by Anonymous Conservative, Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago," Vox Day's "SJW's Always Lie," Hyak's "Road to Serfdom," Evan's "Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy", and "Equality: The Impossible Quest" by van Creveld (yes, that's an odd list, but they really work together well). • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric Mayforth -- The Classic Examination of Mass Movements : Eric Hoffer was a San Francisco longshoreman who self-educated and left behind "The True Believer," an astonishingly insightful examination of the phenomenon of mass movements. Hoffer wrote the book in 1951, when two of the most malignant mass movements in human history, those that produced the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, sprung up, and the writing reflects that to an extent. His insights are timeless, though, and are applicable in examining mass movements of any era. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from enthymeme -- Thought-provoking from start to finish. : A very engaging and insightful work is this, well researched and academic, to the point where it would be dry were it not for the subject matter and Hoffer’s engaging turn of phrase, which gives not only a theoretical view of the world of the fanatic, but a deep analysis of how the fanatic and his world came about. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from sylvia maude -- A book to make you think. : What an amazing book.I found it from a bibliography of a book I had recently read. It is surprising that it was written over 60 years ago. It is relevant today and very perceptive. The writing style is clear, the structure of the book leads the reader on to its conclusions with many sentences that have become regularly quoted. It is not surprising that it has become a classic and I could not put it down. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Very insightful read : Very well researched and presented look at Mass Movements from a non bias point of view. Especially with what is going on in the world today! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Stickershock -- Man was free, free to feel inadequate : This should be on everyone's reading list. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 21, 2012 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from disgusted of dagenham -- The answer to militants everywhere? : Not an easy book to read. The thesis - that all mass movements- are essentially the same in origin and progress is quite difficult to absorb. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2015 )
